The Beach

Kavatsite is an area with a campsite of the same name in the Burgas region, 3 km south of Sozopol. There is a spacious and rocky beach bordering a forest.

The name of the area comes from the word "kavak", which in Turkish means poplar, and is so named because of the poplars that grow in the area.

The sand dunes in the Kavatsite area were declared a protected area in the category of "natural landmark" in 1985. The subject of protection here are the rare Pontic white dunes and their characteristic sand-loving (psammophytic) vegetation. This type of sand dunes is a natural habitat (habitat) of high conservation importance. Extremely problematic protected area, which is practically unguarded. Unregulated camping and the destruction of unique dunes and vegetation are done with impunity. Among the dunes there are "temporary" beach restaurants. It is a paradox that even when it was announced in 1985, part of the area of the existing campsites was included as a nonsense in the protected area. Serious requests to reduce the area of the protected area have been rejected on several occasions. The restitution of the lands of the natural landmark in the so-called "Real boundaries" carried out in the late 1990s is another major precondition and threat to the destruction of this unique natural resource.

Kavatsite Bay is located 3 km south of the old town of Sozopol. It was used as a port in ancient times by the Apollonia polis because of its protection from the northwest winds thanks to the cape "St. Messiah ”and Cape“ St. Agalina. At the bottom of the bay were found the remains of ships, tools, jewelry and ceramic vessels that testify to the economic activity of the region at that time.
